Gorilla & Chimpanzee Trekking
Stand a few metres from a mountain gorilla family. Few travel moments compare.
Encounter Uganda's remarkable primates through unforgettable trekking experiences.
Uganda is one of the best places on earth to meet great apes in the wild. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to around half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, and Kibale Forest has one of the highest concentrations of chimpanzees in East Africa.
Treks start with a briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, then you follow trackers through the forest until you find a habituated family. Once you reach them, you spend a magical hour watching them feed, play and rest. We secure your permits early, plan the right lodges near the trailheads and make sure you arrive prepared.

Frequently asked
How fit do I need to be?
A moderate level of fitness is enough. Treks can take from one hour to most of the day depending on where the gorillas are, over steep and muddy terrain. Porters can be hired to carry your bag and help you on the trail.
Is there a minimum age?
Gorilla trekking in Uganda is for visitors aged 15 and over. Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale has a lower minimum age. We confirm current rules when you book.
How far ahead should I book?
As early as possible, especially for June to September and December. Permits are limited and often sell out months in advance.
What should I wear?
Long sleeves and trousers, sturdy waterproof walking boots, a rain jacket and gardening gloves for gripping vegetation. See our packing list for more.
